Join the AD EX to hear from 2023 Swank Travel Fellow Karina Mendez and Kolb Berglund Travel Fellow Arianna Schall.

Portugal’s rich cultural and historical heritage is best understood through its built environment, showcasing centuries of construction and craftsmanship. From intricate tile facades to weathered pavements and iron balconies, its context unravels the rich tapestry of Portuguese culture and architecture. Karina focused on the intricate artistry and historical narratives encapsulated in azulejos, examining case studies in Porto, Lisbon, and Sintra to unveil the enduring legacy of craftsmanship and cultural identity in shaping urban environments. Through research, sketches, photographs, and historical tours, Karina will share insights into how these places have captured the spirit of their time, providing inspiration and knowledge for the design community.

Arianna’s trip to Copenhagen and Bergen explored the architecture and city planning of the “most walkable city in the world,” known for its mental health benefits. By studying traditional Viking and early human design patterns, she aimed to uncover insights into creating a calmer, healthier culture. This inquiry is particularly relevant amidst a surge in stress and poor mental health attributed to factors like COVID-19, inflation, and the Russia-Ukraine crisis, as reported by the American Institute of Stress and American Psychological Association (APA).

Architecture and Design Foundation Scholarship Committee Chair Peter Goldstein, AIA will lead a moderated Q&A following their presentations.
